The prostate is a male sexual gland located at the base of the bladder, next to the rectum, and surrounds the first section of the urethra. The function of the gland is to produce spermatic liquid.
The specific position of the prostate explains how a disorder involving the gland affects urinary function.
With aging the prostate tends to enlarge and increase in volume (prostatic hypertrophy or hyperplasia) causing disturbances affecting emptying of the bladder.
